Simple and to the point.
It struck me that most of the time some of the best pieces of advice are those that state the obvious and are simple. However, what may seem obvious and simple in principle all to often gets translated into a complicated theory by the latest “business guru” trying to sell a book or make some money – cynical?
Perhaps.
Let’s take the advice that Jack Welch gives. Be Yourself – well who else would you/can you be?
As Oscar Wilde famously said “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
Why would you want to be or be perceived as anyone else? Isn’t it more of an effort to be something or someone you are not? (Unless you are in the acting profession or trying to fool someone)
Being you means being true to yourself. It means accepting who and what you are, what you believe in and what you stand for and celebrating that your uniqueness is what stands you apart from the billions of other people on this planet.
In a business context this is what will attract people to work with you or not; to want to do business with you or not and to buy from you or not. Those that “fit” with your style, beliefs, approach and way of doing things will “buy” you and those that don’t will seek to work with or buy from someone else – and that’s OK.
So celebrate your uniqueness and be yourself this week.
