YouTube is one of the most powerful marketing tools on the web, yet many entrepreneurs are failing to realise its full potential.
More than 100 million videos are viewed each day on the popular video sharing platform, a market which multi-media production company 7video says remains remarkably untapped.

The company, which counts household names among its clients including the National Trust and Sport England, says business should be taking advantage of online video to reach a wider audience, with YouTube a vital part of the marketing mix.

Director Peter Sims said: "YouTube has grown to become one of the largest online communication tools in the world. It has the potential to increase a business's online presence dramatically for a fraction of traditional marketing costs.

"The benefit of a professionally, produced video on YouTube, either as an advert or to demonstrate a product or a service, is that it is available to be found 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It's a marketing tool working for businesses all the time."

Based in the Midlands, 7Video works on a variety of projects with both public and private sector clients across the UK, from covering major events with live broadcasts to creating corporate video films for websites.

Peter added: "We know that many entrepreneurs want to have a go at creating their own videos. It's fantastic to see businesses beginning to become aware of the opportunities created by having a presence on YouTube.

"But we're also aware of how a badly-produced video, with limited sound and lighting quality, can also create a poor impression of the company on the web. We've actually been called in at short notice to re-take videos for companies who realised that a wobbly film, produced with a hand-held camcorder without a suitable microphone, didn't portray the professional image the company was aiming for.

"And with millions of videos on the platform, it's no good just uploading it and hoping customers will find it. You need to make sure all the information and captioning to accompany the video is correctly tagged to ensure as many eyes as possible see the result – otherwise, quite frankly, there's no point in doing it at all. You have to signpost the video to the audience so it can be found."

Here's 7video's five top tips for creating a corporate YouTube film:

1. Make the right first impression - The most common use of web videos is the landing page of the company's website, make sure it captures the imagination but don't make it too long.

2. Make sure your brand is visible - The branding should be easily seen on the video, it's important your company identity connects with the audience.

3. Get the content right - If the content and the message is relevant, the video will be on and can easily become "viral" ensuring that your products or your company are viewed thousands of times in all corners of the world.

4. Get the right equipment - Don't move the camera too much, don't zoom in and out a lot, and make sure you have appropriate lighting. Good video can ruined by poor audio, such as background noise

5. Plan the video before filming – Make sure you know what you want to film, what messages you want to convey and who is going to be the voice the audience will hear. Otherwise creating your own video could be a drain on your resources and your time.
