Barclays Take One Small Step Awards Celebrates Entrepreneurs with £500,000 in Prizes Featured

Barclays Business last night awarded 9 regional winners cheques for £50,000 each at the star studded Take One Small Step Awards in London. 27 finalists and their supporters from across nine regions attended the event, with the two runners up in each region receiving cheques for £3,000 meaning a total prize fund of over £500,000.

Barclays Business have long been a supporter of SME's and entrepreneurs across the UK. This year the continued good work of Barclays Relationship Managers in each region to build support for the Take One Small Step awards resulted in a record 1800 entries.

Amongst the celebrities honouring the finalists were former England goalkeeping legend Ray Clemence, Nick Hewer of the BBC's The Apprentice, Julie Meyer of Ariadne Capital and a host of previous winners of the awards. Competition in each category was tight but there could only be one winner in each category:

Southern Region- SnuggleBundl- David Solomons & Mike Edwards

SnuggleBundl has recently developed a unique baby blanket. SnuggleBundl hope to make parents' lives much easier by bringing to marketa simple and safe way to move and carry a baby whilst keeping the baby comfortably wrapped up.

South West Region- Lick Me I'm Delicious- Charles Francis

Lick Me I'm Delicious is a new ice cream parlour, offering hand-churned ice cream creations from a seemingly limitless combination of flavours and ingredients. Lick Me I'm Delicious hopes to be able to offer more customers a veriety of customised, lickable ice creams.

London Region- RMP Enterprise- Chris Wickson, Ali Lindsay & Oliver Sidwell

RMP Enterprise, founded by three students, operates within the student recruitment market, encouraging employers to engage and recruit graduates earlier through work placements and internships. In order to meet demand RMP Enterprise plans to continue growing their client base.

Eastern Region- Student Pocket Guide- Ben Farrin

The Student Pocket Guide hopes to create a mobile phone application that will provide frequent local student discounts, competitions, tips and advice. The application will allow The Student Pocket Guide to reach a much wider audience, benefiting their clients and student customer base alike.

Central Region- Goodeseats- Matt & Lesley Goode

"The Goodseat" is a re-usable, portable, heated stadium seat cover. The size of a laptop bag, it is available in a variety of sports clubs' colours and logos. With heat supplied by a click of a button, Goodseats hopes to be able to offer more customers the opportunity to sit in comfort during games.

Wales- Roman Fort Project- Paul Harston & Dean Paton

Roman Tours provide education tours to over 30,000 school children annually, breathing life into Roman history. Roman Tours hopes fund a 2.5 acre Roman fort in Chesire to educate thousands of children across the UK and provide a centre for local community groups, charities and schools.

North West Region- Salad | Bowl- Matthew Cole & Adam Meyers

Salad | Bowl work alongside health professionals to create balanced, healthy meal options. With minimal food waste through local charity food donations and using fair trade products and biodegradable packaging where possible, funding will help Salad | Bowl deliver more vitamin-packed lunches to desks.

North East Region- ChocCards- Laura Kemp & Gaye Shakeshaft

ChocCards designs individual wrappers for foil wrapped, Belgian milk chocolate bars for businesses, weddings and all celebratory occasions. ChocCards is looking to grow their business with a web-based tool allowing customers to customise their own wrappers, as well as expand their range into wine.

Scotland- UWI Technology- Pete Higgins

The UWI Label is a smart label that will revolutionise food jars and combat unnecessary wastage. The UWI label will help more customers save money and avoid waste or unsafe food by informing them of how long a food jar has been opened for and when the contents are no longer safe to consume.

Well done Barclay's for sending a clear message to the UK SME's that you recognise their importance to the UK economy.

The SME's need the support of the Banks and the Banks need to regain the confidence of the SME's - that appears to be mutual then!
