You might not be familiar with the term 'guest blogging' but it's really a simple concept that can help to promote your business. It means writing a blog post (normally only 500-1000 words) for an existing blog that is not owned by you.

Freelance writers usually charge for this content, whilst businesses provide it because of the branding and reputation benefits it brings. Here are some of the advantages guest blogging can have for your business.

Build your brand recognition

If there was a sales event made for your target market where you could build brand recognition and generate leads, wouldn’t you send a salesperson? Guest blogging can have exactly the same effect at a fraction of the price. There are blogs specifically tailored to your target market that are read on a daily basis. Surely it’s worthwhile writing a short blog that will be seen by all these people?

Promote your business to a new audience

If you’ve got a new product or service aimed at a totally new audience, guest blogging can be a great way to start a conversation with them. Alternatively you could use it as market research to confirm or reject the validity of your new venture.

Become an authority in your market

The great advantage of blogging is that you can talk authoritatively about a subject that you know well. It might not sound like this will help you make money but, in the internet age, putting your point across on a well-respected blog could be the very thing that convinces a prospect to buy your product or service rather than your rival's.

Improve your website’s search engine ranking

Even though search engines use complex algorithms to sort the results they produce, it is widely known that having a lot of links to your website from authoritative sources of information will help you to move up the rankings. Contribute to well-known blogs, ensuring a link to your website is included, and you’ll only help your cause.

Test the market for your own blog

Guest blogging can be a great way to test whether a given target market has any interest in reading a blog you’re thinking of writing. If you’ve got a great idea for a blog that will help to promote your business, why not test it out by writing a guest blog for an existing, established blog? It’ll help you understand whether your blog is a good idea and, if not, it’ll still help you boost your online presence.

Great piece Sarah.

Many businesses are just learning about the benefits of guest blogging.Guest blogging has long been an SEO tactic for creating quality inbound links.

Researching potential sites to approach is straight forward;

Use the Google Blog search function which can be found on the Left hand side of the Google home page under 'Everything' click the 'More' tab and you will see 'Blog search'link.

Type in your product / keyword / search term and a list of blogs with relevant content will be returned.

Read and review these for potential targets. One way to start a relationship is to leave blog comments useful insightful comments will get you noticed.

Most blogs will carry links to social media accounts so follow or friend these people and build a relationship.

As Sarah suggests embrace guest blogging, use it as part of your overall digital marketing strategy.

Hi Sarah,

I/we can totally vouch for the importance of Guest Blogging for Search Engine Optimisation.

I would comfortably say its the most powerful form of Link Building to boost your Authority in the Search Engines.

We did it for a major online wine retailer with massive success.

This comment feature here only takes 1000 characters so I have written an explanation of how we took a Wine Company from nowhere to dominating Google for 3 massively competitive phrases on our Digital Marketing Consultancy blog www.yodelay.com/seo/guest-blog-dominate-google.

Again, a great Post,

Duncan
