YouTube is a staple of social media marketing. The video sharing service founded in 2005 attracts a fifth of all social media traffic, while a third of companies use YouTube for their businesses. The viral nature of video sharing renders the service a popular promotional platform, with the most popular YouTube video gaining over 370 million views. If you’re not utilising YouTube for your business what are you waiting for? Here are some tips to help maximise your effectiveness on the service.

1. Utilise the ‘description’ feature on all uploads

The description feature is an essential and useful tool and can be highly effective in maximising the exposure you get from the service. As well as briefly describing the content of the video, encourage viewers to subscribe to your YouTube channel on all uploads. Gaining subscribers is key to effectively networking on YouTube and gently reminding viewers will work in your favour. Asking viewers to share and suggest your channel and videos to their friends is also advisable.

2. Share links to your Youtube videos on your other social media accounts

It is always important to maintain an orderly, ‘complete’ rendering of your company across social networks. Often, it is appropriate and useful to share content across several social networks; this prompts users to connect with you on other platforms, with the intention of keeping up-to-date with your businesses multi-faceted endeavours. Creating a closely linked network of social media accounts will create a favourable perception towards your company’s social media know-how.

3. Ensure you utilise your channel

The user YouTube channel page is in effect your profile page and will be the place that viewers come to should they want to know more about your company or view more videos. Use it wisely! The page can be styled to your specification, ensure it reflects the values and identity you wish your brand to convey. Ensure that the relevant information sections are filled so that viewers gain an insight into your company and post links to your other social media accounts.

4. Network...Be active

Be an active YouTuber. As with all social media platforms in order to see results it is important to stay consistent. Establish manageable and realistic intervals at which you will upload new content. Engage your subscribers, so they anticipate developments. Also add friends, comment on videos and subscribe to channels with similar interests to your own.

5. Be original

Due to the nature of YouTube there are thousands of business-orientated accounts. The majority of which offer little in the way of innovation, simply proposing quick get rich schemes and uninspiring mundane content. The most successful and popular Youtube videos/channels are from users who think outside the box or cleverly play on their target demographics interests.

Thanks for this guide Malachi, we previously noticed the "As seen on" feature on YouTube and was wondering how brands can claim this spot and benefit from the exposure. Any thoughts?
