Ofcom closes investigation into Project Canvas and YouView technology

Ofcom has confirmed that it will not investigate plans agreed between major television providers to launch ‘YouView', a new branded user interface which provides television content via a single set-top box. ‘Project Canvas' refers to the partnership between BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Five, BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva and its intentions to provide viewers with digital terrestrial channels and internet-delivered TV services from 2011.

In deciding whether to investigate the Project, Ofcom considered the complaints received from third parties and the potential harm to arise from the Project. In the interests of consumers, Ofcom has concluded that YouView's impact on the market will not be sufficient to merit an investigation. The market is still evolving and any potential harm will be offset against the benefits afforded to consumers and viewers.
