AVG Security Tip: 'Tis the Season for Safe Online trading

It's Christmas again -- you can't escape the fact. The marketing machines have been fired up for some months already now and the 'yuletide brand' has been emblazoned across both physical and virtual storefronts since the summer ended.

As a small to medium sized business that trades online and aims to attract e-shopper business, there are some foundational principles that you must follow if you want to instil user confidence and ensure repeat customer business. Users have become far more security-aware when it comes to online trading and if your systems don't make the grade, the notoriously fickle e-shopper will soon go elsewhere.

AVG's top tips for building a secure online trading marketplace this Christmas are as follows:

  • Ensure your online payments system is built to keep user identity and users safe from information theft -- this is a top concern of paramount importance.
  • Hosting an online shopping offering means that you are effectively opening up a new entry portal to your systems and data -- you need to ensure that the appropriate firewall protection is in place to protect the business network.
  • Remember that the greatest threat to corporate security may come from within -- ensure that appropriate policies governing employee access and privileges are in place.
  • If managing your own file storage and email servers, ensure these are also running up-to-date security software.
