The launch of government start-up loans

Ever since hearing that the government was planning on offering young people student style start up loans I’ve been looking forward to finding out the exact details of the scheme.

The £82m scheme is being launched by David Cameron and it hasn’t disappointed. It’s a very simple common sense approach to kick starting thousands of new businesses and getting young people into work.

Businesses don’t need much to get started and it’s a sound idea that is essentially killing two birds with one stone, giving a boost to the economy and getting young people into work. The scheme also offers mentoring and guidance to show young people how to run their businesses, something we tend to be lacking in this country.

It’s been hit by a lot of criticism, but how else are young people with no credit record or employment going to be given a chance and funding of £2,500? The banks certainly won’t help them out!

I admit there is still so much more the government needs to do, forcing banks to lend money and cutting red tape for businesses, being two very big issues that need to be addressed for the sake of us all. However, I believe this is a big step in the right direction and Is vital in moving away from Labour’s ridiculous deep rooted ethos of encouraging all young people to attend university, no matter what their skills set or job prospects.

Startup loans certainly bridge the gap in some way for seed funding, but to ensure money is not squandered and put to effective use, the govt should also look at schemes/programmes similar to UCL Advances and UCL Smile - giving entrepreneurs access to resources  and mentors who can provide that crucial guidance to increase the chances for success. Else all we are doing is adding further stress and debt burden.
