Pop star 101 on social media domination

These days web presence to a pop star is equally if not more important than artistic talent and good looks (don’t believe me? Google Rebecca Black!) Our Social networking crazy age has made it imperative for performers to showcase their material on the World Wide Web. The result has been that artists established and let’s say ‘not so established,’ scramble to monopolise the social media domain.  An Official Facebook Fan page, Youtube Channel, Twitter account, and the dependably music artist-orientated Myspace are probably the minimum requirements for an active artist in the 21st century.  Sounds tricky right? Well it is! And as fans, followers, bloggers and tabloid newspapers will surely inform you...not everyone negotiates the minefield of social media successfully.

Perhaps fittingly pint-sized pop prince, Justin Bieber is the King of social media with almost 34 million ‘fans’ on Facebook and almost 11.5 million Twitter followers on his accounts at press. Bear in mind that these numbers increase every time the page is refreshed! However, this does not account for the various Bieber-orientated fan-made accounts such as: @UniverseOfBiebs, BiebersTopFans and @AwwBiebers; whose bio reads, “We're not fans, we're Beliebers. We're not obsessed, we're dedicated. He’s not a singer, he's our hero.”

YIKES! With the appeal of following famous people’s Twitter accounts being the supposed ability to interact with them, stay up-to-date with their activities, and know their inner-most thoughts, Bieber utilises the platform expertly! Remaining genuine, his tweets mirror his public persona. He does not seek to overtly promote at every given opportunity, instead he often appears to give an insight into his life; which engages his fans. For example tweeting, “pool, sunshine, friends and best part....no school this week. All smiles.”

Fans also relish Bieber’s replies to their questions, or the possibility that he would ‘retweet’ them i.e. (reshare their tweet with his followers. It’s not all fun and games though and Bieber promotes when he needs to “BIG NEWS for my UK fans!! #SOMEDAY will be available exclusively at Harrods on August 5th!! LEGGO!” The success of Bieber’s web presence is reflected in 2 multi-platinum certified albums and cult-status!
