Appcelerator, the leading platform for rapidly developing native mobile, desktop, and iPad applications using Web technologies announced today that it has entered into an agreement with PayPal to offer an integrated mobile commerce solution through PayPal’s merchant channel. This new mobile commerce offering will make it easy for the millions of PayPal merchants, along with Appcelerator’s 77,000+ Web developers to rapidly build native iOS, Android, and BlackBerry commerce applications across handsets, tablets, connected TVs, and other devices.

Appcelerator and PayPal Enter Mobile Commerce Partnership
Appcelerator has signed a mobile partner program agreement with PayPal to offer a fully integrated mobile commerce offering called Titanium+Commerce to over 8 million PayPal merchants in the first half of 2011. Titanium+Commerce, available in beta starting today, makes it easy for any merchant to rapidly build cross-platform mobile applications that harness a full set of commerce capabilities using existing Web skills and technologies. Merchants and online businesses can rapidly extend into mobile commerce by enabling the purchase of real and virtual goods, services, and content from smartphones, tablets, connected TVs, and other devices.

“Appcelerator is already the number two Apple App Store publisher because they enable rapid mobile innovation,” said Osama Bedier, PayPal’s vice president of platform, mobile and new ventures. “I’m excited to be working with them to bring that innovation potential to mobile commerce, which I believe will one day be bigger than e commerce.”

Titanium+Commerce will initially consist of an integration of PayPal’s Mobile Payment Library on top of Appcelerator’s Titanium development platform. Both companies are also working to expand their capabilities to include a broader range of integrated commerce capabilities, including, and transaction analytics and other joint integrations. A demonstration of Titanium+Commerce is now available and will be made available in early 2011 as ready-to-use templates for any merchant to easily customize with their own branding and inventory.

Sierra Leads $9 Million Investment in Appcelerator; eBay Makes Strategic Investment
Appcelerator also announced that it has secured a $9 million round of funding. The Series B funding is being led by Sierra Ventures, with eBay Inc. participating as a strategic investor. Existing investors Storm Ventures and Larry Augustin also participated in the round. The funding will be used to accelerate growth of the company’s mobile commerce offering, investment in Appcelerator’s platform development, and expansion into new markets.

“We look for exploding markets and market leaders within those markets and Appcelerator fits that bill perfectly. They have shown vision and execution to enable developers to push the envelope with the type and breadth of mobile applications they are bringing to market,” said Tim Guleri, managing director of Sierra Ventures. “We fully expect the company’s growth to skyrocket alongside the success of its customers and burgeoning developer community.”

Appcelerator Now Second Largest Apple App Store Publisher
Appcelerator’s traction with developers, agencies, and businesses continues to grow at a rapid pace. Over 77,000 developers have used Appcelerator’s Titanium platform to build 5,000 mobile and desktop apps, up from just 100 at the start of this year. The current pace exceeds 1,000 new applications per month and the company is now the second largest publisher of applications on Apple’s App Store.

“The strong support we are seeing from our venture investors and eBay, together with Appcelerator’s rapid growth clip, underscores the market need for sophisticated, yet easy-to-build applications that run on any platform,” said Jeff Haynie, CEO of Appcelerator. “Appcelerator will continue to expand our platform offering across the major operating systems and devices and to enable developers to easily integrate value-add commerce, location, social, advertising, and enterprise capabilities into their applications.”

Availability and Free, Limited Trial
Titanium+Commerce will be available in the second half of 2011 to Appcelerator’s developers worldwide as part of its Professional and Enterprise subscriptions. A free, 30-day trial of PayPal’s Mobile Payment Library for Titanium is available today. For more information and to view a video demo, visit http://www.appcelerator.com/products/titaniumcommerce/.
